The Service

Ashland Road West is a registered care home for adults with learning disabilities located in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. We provide person-centred care and support to ten service users with moderate to profound learning disabilities, physical disabilities, communication needs and complex healthcare-related requirements. We support people with behaviours that challenge and provide full training to our colleagues to be confident in their support abilities.

Every day, we do all we can to help our service users be as independent as possible by working together as a team and having their best interests at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to come and join our family of expert colleagues.

"Every day is different, and every day feels meaningful. We don't just provide care, we help people live the lives they choose. Knowing you've made a positive difference to someone's day is what keeps me motivated." – Current Colleague

The Role

As a Learning Disability Support Worker, your role will involve helping service users to live as independently as possible. The life of a Support Worker includes supporting service users with personal care, day trips out, playing games, sensory experiences and even watching the odd movie!

In addition to this, some of your main duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting with visits to health appointments, day trips and holidays
  • Administering medication
  • Providing emotional support
  • Supporting and encouraging engagement in learning opportunities
  • High levels of personal care including washing, bathing, dressing and feeding service users (full training provided)
  • Assisting service users with domestic tasks such as cooking, cleaning and laundry
  • Using hoists, wheelchairs and other equipment as required by each service user (full training provided)
  • Supporting individuals with challenging behaviour (full training provided)

Please note that due to the needs of our service users, there are high levels of moving and handling and risk management involved in the role; as such, you will need to be willing and able to undertake these duties.

About You

We are looking for a compassionate, reliable and values-driven individual who is passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities to live happy, fulfilling and independent lives. Previous care experience is welcomed but not essential. We value individuals with the right attitude, caring nature and commitment to making a positive difference in people's lives.

Above all, we seek candidates who genuinely share our values of care, respect, dignity, compassion and empowerment. We appreciate team players who are supportive of the needs of others.

Service users are at the heart of everything we do, so we would like to hear from you if you are friendly, flexible and willing to provide high standards of personal care and support using a person-centred approach. Although the role can be challenging at times, the training and support we provide will ensure that you are well equipped and confident to hit the ground running.

Experience working with people with learning disabilities or previous experience as a Support Worker, Care Assistant, Healthcare Assistant or in another social care role is desired but not essential, so please don't let this put you off from applying. We look for personal values that align with NCHA's CLEAR values.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be positive and enthusiastic to do your job well while modelling our CLEAR values
  • Be willing and eager to learn and attend all the training required (some training is at Head Office in Clifton)
  • Be able to handle sometimes challenging situations and be resilient
  • Have the ability to read, follow and record written instructions and information accurately, and communicate in a clear, friendly and professional manner
  • Be a competent IT user, including using Microsoft Word, sending emails and updating records in systems (training for our systems will be provided)

Working Hours and Shift Patterns

You will ideally be able to work full time, 37 hours per week (but no less than 30 hours per week) working 5 days out of 7 on a rotating shift basis. Our home is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, to meet the needs of our wonderful service users.

It is essential that you are able to work various shifts on a rota basis, including bank holidays and weekends:

  • Early: 7:00am to 3:00pm
  • Mid: 12:00pm to 9:15pm
  • Late: 1:30pm to 9:30pm
  • Waking Nights: 8:45pm to 7:15am (a bonus is also paid for waking night shifts)

Location: Ashland Road West, Sutton-in-Ashfield

Due to its location, local candidates or candidates who can drive are highly desirable, as public transport involves a 10-minute walk to the care home from the nearest bus stop during the early hours of the morning, making it unreliable for shifts starting at 7:00am. Our home is approximately 18 minutes' drive from Mansfield town centre.

If you would like to speak to our friendly management team at Ashland Road West about this post, please call us on 01623 575799.

NCHA strives to be a welcoming and inclusive employer and particularly welcomes applications from men, who are currently under-represented within our Care and Support department.

We may close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient interest.
